How to Polish Quartz: A Guide

How do you polish quartz? If you’re trying to give your quartz countertops that extra shine, you may be wondering how to polish quartz and how to shine quartz countertops like new. Follow these simple steps and learn how to polish quartz at home!

Clean the Quartz

The first thing you'll need is a soft, clean cloth. The reason for this is that the dust on your quartz will scratch it, so it's important that the surface be as clean as possible.

To start polishing, take your cloth and run it along the surface of your quartz in a back and forth motion. You'll want to use minimal pressure when doing this so you don't push any dirt or dust into the layers of the stone.

Next, wet your cloth with water - make sure not to leave any excess water on top of the stone or you may end up diluting what you've just done!

Now place your damp cloth on top of some dry ones, then repeat the same process from before- only this time use more pressure!

Inspect the Quartz

When inspecting your quartz, you need to make sure that it is free of any cracks or flaws. You can tell if the quartz has a crack or flaw by looking at the crystal's surface and seeing if there are any scratches. If there are scratches, then that means that there is a crack. Cracks can be very dangerous because they will grow in size over time and may even cause the entire piece of quartz to break apart. In order to check for cracks on your quartz, you need to inspect every side of it.

Choose a Polishing Method

  1. Fill a bucket with water and add 1/4 cup of dish soap.

  2. Place the wet, soapy quartz in the bucket and let it sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing it with a nylon scrub pad or steel wool pad.

  3. Rinse off the soap and water with a hose or garden hose sprayer then wipe dry with paper towels or cloths until all of the residue is gone from the surface of the quartz stones.

  4. Apply wax such as carnauba wax, furniture wax, or beeswax polish by either rubbing it on in circular motions with your hands or applying it with a clean cloth as if you were waxing a car

Begin Polishing

  1. Prepare the surface of your quartz by thoroughly cleaning it with a mild cleanser and scrubbing it with a nylon pad. Rinse the surface off well and dry it thoroughly.

  2. If you are polishing natural quartz, you will need to make sure that you have removed any dirt or oils first, as these substances can react badly with the abrasives in the polish. It is also important not to use an acid-based cleaner on natural quartz, as this can etch the stone's surface and create a cloudy appearance over time.

Finish Polishing

Before you start polishing, make sure that the surface is free of any dirt, oils, and other contaminants. This will help ensure that your polish won't be impacted by the dirt and it will also ensure that your polish will last longer. For cleaning, use a soft cloth with water and mild detergent. Rinse off the surface thoroughly with water and then allow it to air-dry before polishing.

Next, you should use the appropriate type of wax for your quartz countertop. Make sure it's not a food-grade wax! For example, you'll want to stay away from beeswax or carnauba wax if you have small children who might come into contact with the countertops as these types of wax are edible.
